Memorial of Saint Ignatius of Loyola

 Saturday, July 31

Herod the tetrarch heard of the reputation of Jesus and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist.  He has been raised from the dead; that is why might powers are at work in him.”    (Mt 14:1-2)

Herod Antipas feared the dead John the Baptist as much as he feared him alive.  Ironically, he attributes John’s power to Jesus who was even more powerful than John and would be the one to rise from the dead.  John testified to the truth; Jesus is the Truth.

Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) is one of the more formidable saints.  He and his followers are known for their zeal and generous spirit.  Their unofficial motto is For the Greater Glory of God.  It is to act not just with total commitment, but with focus to do the greatest good.  For God’s glory, not my own.
