Daily Reflection: Thursday, November 4

November 4.  Memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo

This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.  (Lk 15:2)

What was Jesus thinking?  Eating with sinners!   Probably more interesting than eating with Pharisees, but I bet he ate with them, too.

As a young friar, I had a summer internship in a federal prison.  I usually ate lunch with the prisoners.  In fact, they shared their lunch with me.  I was their guest!  Luke 15 is about the joy of the sinner turning around and the lost being found.  That summer in prison with my fellow sinners may have accelerated my own conversion.  It was a happy time.
