Celebrating the Feast of St. Francis with ReClam the Bay Demonstration

We continue our celebration of the Feast of St. Francis with a ReClam the Bay Demonstration. Immediately following the Blessing of the Animals on the front lawn of the Brant Beach Church, we were thrilled to host a special demonstration by St Francis Parish ReClam the Bay Clam Ministry. The demonstration took place right behind our Community Center, where an upweller is located—a tool used for nurturing young shellfish before they are released into the bay.

Attendees, including young learners like Cooper and Ava-Rose, had the chance to dive into the world of clams and oysters. Fun fact they discovered: an adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water daily, while large adult clams can filter about 40 gallons each day. These small but mighty shellfish play a crucial role in maintaining water quality, and Cooper and Ava-Rose were amazed by their natural filtration power!

ReClam the Bay’s work helps support the health of our local ecosystem, and they’re always eager to welcome new volunteers. If you’d like to learn more or get involved, visit our page for more information and find out how you can lend a hand to this fantastic cause.
These upwellers require regular maintenance and cleaning every week to ensure the clams and oysters grow in a healthy environment. This vital work is essential for supporting our local ecosystem, and ReClam the Bay could greatly benefit from volunteers to help with these tasks. Volunteering with this ministry is a hands-on way to make a difference and protect our waters!

Feel free to reach out to ReClam the Bay—your participation can make a big difference!
