There is a tradition among Franciscan communities to commemorate the Transitus ( passing or death) by distributing the small almond cookies that were St. Francis’ favorites . They were made by his friend, Lady Jacoba Pico, who was summoned to Francis as he lay dying. She quickly came to him bearing the almond confections and the cloth she used to make the brother’s robes, candles, incense, and a beautiful white burial cloth. Since women were not allowed into the room where Francis lay, he called out to her “ Brother Jacoba” and she was able to enter. At the Transitus this year, the Secular Franciscans will be distributing the homemade almond cookies. We sincerely hope you will join us at 5:00pm on October 3rd to celebrate this beautiful and spiritual service. All are welcome!
