Daily Reflection: Monday, March 7

Monday of the First Week in Lent

When did we see you hungry?

The reading from Leviticus 19 at mass today and the Gospel (Mt 25) say the same thing in different ways.  Moses gives commandments; firm, but calm and abstract.  Jesus, on the other hand, makes things very personal.  You do it to me.

How can I make excuses to avoid doing good to the Lord in the person of the poor? Yet I do.  Or, I choose which poor I like.  I need to look more carefully at the poor I avoid.  Am I afraid of them?  Will they in some way contaminate me?  The needy force me to look at myself and then to look at them and see the Lord.  What joy!
