The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. (Lk 1:42)
No theology or deep spirituality from me today. This feast is all about affection, the affection of a mother for her son and a son for his mother. “Where is my mother?” is a fear-filled question for a child and it often lingers into adulthood when we are naturally separated from our mothers. We want to know where our mothers are because we need their support and because we need to know that they are safe. Mary followed her Son from Cana to the Cross. Her presence had to have been a consolation in his difficult moments. During his crucifixion, Jesus entrusted the care of his mother to John. She would have a place and she would be safe with the Beloved Disciple. In the gospel of John, Jesus promises his disciples that where he is they would be.
We celebrate Jesus’ love for his Blessed Mother and the place she has at his side.
