Saturday of the Third Week of Lent

The tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven

but beat his breast and prayed,

“O God, be merciful to me a sinner.”   (Lk 18:13)

Jesus gives us an image of a beautiful soul.  The tax collector knows his poverty before God and prays with empty hands.  When he receives the flood of grace, he will still be humble.
