Daily Reflection: Monday, April 4

Monday of the Fifth Week of Lent

I will have no part in the death of this woman.  (Daniel 13:46)

The first reading from mass today is might be the longest in the weekday lectionary.  It is the story of two dirty old men who try to have their way with innocent Susanna.  When she refuses, they accuse her of a tryst with a young man who has conveniently escaped.  The penalty for her alleged crime is death.  Daniel sees what is happening and speaks up.  It is a fortuitous coincidence that this reading happens at the beginning of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

The reading is a rich parable that invites reflection on human dignity, respect for others, integrity and truth. It also reminds us of the reality of sin and evil and what we are called to do.
