Daily Reflection: Thursday, June 27

Thursday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time

Everyone who listens to the words of mine and acts on them will be like the wise man who built his house on rock.  The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house.  But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.  And everyone who listens to the words of mine but does not act on them will be like a fool who built his house on sand.  (Mt 7:24-27)

Living on or near a barrier island as we do, we laugh nervously when we hear these words.  Everything is built on sand!  But we know that Jesus is speaking metaphorically about our life of faith.

I arrived at St. Francis soon after the mess of Hurricane Sandy had been cleaned up.  I heard the painful stories and also inspiring ones.  The best was how the parish came together as parish to worship and to support each other.  St. Mary’s opened their doors to St. Francis and people came to pray and embrace and offer help.  Their faith was solidly founded on the rock of Jesus.  The floods did not shake it.  That first mass together was the evidence.
