Daily Reflection: Saturday, December 10

Saturday of the the Second Week of Advent

... Elijah has already come.   (Mt 17:12)

Jewish tradition still hopes for the return of Elijah before the coming of the Messiah.  Jesus tells his disciples that John the Baptist has come as Elijah.  In 1 and 2 Kings, Elijah is a purifying prophet who calls the king and people to return to God and correct worship.

Through the Scripture readings, John the Baptist casts a long shadow on the season of Advent. We understand his call to reform.  But what did John mean personally to Jesus as he, John, established the direction of the road to the Kingdom of God?
