Daily Reflection: Tuesday, January 16

Tuesday January 16

When Samuel set out to anoint a king for Israel, he looked at those sons of Jesse who would be considered the most likely candidates. However, the Lord did not choose one of them but sent for Jesse’s youngest son who was tending sheep in the fields. David was ‘ruddy and handsome’ making a good appearance but not chosen for his looks. God knew his heart and sent the Spirit to rest upon him. Mark’s Gospel today also tells us that God does not always follow the expected path by teaching that the Sabbath was not the ultimate guide for behavior. “The Sabath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” We also are not to be guided by appearances, nor even solely by tradition. It is the heart that matters most!
