Daily Reflection: Monday, May 1

Monday May 1 St. Joseph the Worker

The Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker comes this year at the beginning of the fourth week of Easter. The first reading tells us of Peter’s indignant refusal during a vision to eat what he considered profane. As if he knew better than the voice from God! Contrast this with Joseph’s response to the dream that told him to take Mary as his wife even though she was already pregnant.

Both Joseph and Peter were entrusted with the work of caring for the ‘Church’, for Joseph in the womb of Mary, and for Peter in its infancy after the Resurrection. Joseph continued his work in silence while Peter became a strong voice shepherding the community of believers. Both are models for workers, committed to their respective missions.
