The Acts of the Apostles give us a brief history of God’s action in the Isrealite community up to the ministry of John the Baptist. The Gospel tells us how Jesus’s ministry of service was the way he chose to have his followers continue his work.
By identifying himself as I AM Jesus makes the connection between him and God the Father, and tells us that whoever receives him receives the one who sent him. As straightforward as this seems to us who know the whole story, his followers still did not understand. The new vision that Jesus proclaimed needed a developing sense of God’s love and compassion, one that continues to challenge us today.
