Daily Reflection: Monday, December 13

Monday, December 13

Today, on the church calendar we remember St. Lucy, the patroness of eye problems. It has been told that during her lifetime, the Governor’s soldiers gouged out her eyes but after she died, miraculously her eyes were restored. There is a tradition that on her feastday of December 13, a woman in the community would dress in a white robe with a red sash and wear a wreath on her head with burning candles. This was in memory of Lucy who used to bring food to the poor in the catacombs, dressed with candles so that she would make her way through the darkness. Although there are many legends coming from her history, this is a friend to have if you are having eye problems.
