Daily Reflection: Tuesday, February 8

Tuesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time

If the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain you, how much less this temple which I have built.  (1 Kings 8:27)

In the friary, we recently received a very impressive catalog from a company that restores churches.  It contained many pictures of magnificently restored churches, churches of varied architecture.  Looking at each church, I thought, “Yes, I could pray there.”  I could see each church as both a tribute to God and a celebration of our longing for God.  Sometimes, though, we get rather attached to our churches, maybe more than we should.  Solomon’s prayer reminds us of God’s utter transcendence.  If we find God only in one place, we miss that.
