Daily Reflection: Friday, March 3

Friday of the First Week of Lent

I tell you,

unless your righteousness surpasses that

of the scribes and Pharisees,

you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven.  (Mt 5:20)

The scribes and the Pharisees were learned people.  They knew the Law of Moses and all the regulations in the Hebrew Scriptures.  And how to practice them.  Give them credit for working on being holy.  But Jesus says that we, his disciples, need to be more.  Righteousness is more than exact observance of the rules: it is about full, rich and loving relationships.  All in the embrace of divine love.
