Daily Reflection: Saturday, March 4

Saturday of the First Week of Lent

But I say to you, love your enemies,

and pray for those who persecute you,

that you may be children of your heavenly Father….  (Mt 5:44-45)

There is a lot of anger around.  I think it happens when people feel persecuted.  That is just how they feel.  But the children of God are different.

When I was pastor of an historic Black Catholic Church, my parishioners showed themselves to be children of our heavenly Father.  Just by being with them, I learned about their experience of being Black.  They spoke truthfully and without exaggeration.  I know that their experience of racism is real and I think that it is a kind of persecution.  But they did not act like angry people.  If anything about them was over the top, it was love and welcome for everyone.  “But I say to you….”
