Davie Weiner, May The Angels Lead You to Paradise

Letter from the Pastor 1st Sunday of Lent February 26, 2023

“Music can name the unnamable and communicate the unknowable.” – Leonard Bernstein

Leonard Bernstein was absolutely right.  He was not the only one, however, who knew that music speaks to us where words fall short.  Plato also knew that music is “the language of the soul” and we know that music has that unique ability to speak to ours hearts and lift our spirits.

Music is a language, but it is not simply stringing notes and chords together.  Music is created when those sounds are powered by the soul of the musician, inspired by the composer’s work, and, to my bias, connecting with God’s Great Spirit.  I believe it is only then that music truly enlivens us and has the ability to transport us to a different place and experience God’s Spirit touching our spirit.

At times, when I attend Mass at another church, I am usually reminded – sometimes immediately - at how lucky we are to have such an incredible music program here at St. Francis.  We are truly blessed!!

However, as was announced last weekend, our community mourns the passing of our beloved flutist and friend, Davie Weiner.  When Davie played the flute one might have thought it was magical.  Of course, we know that it was not.  It was simply Davie.  Her soul was connected to her song and we all knew it.

Davie has been a part of our music program for the past 20 years.  Like the flute, she was subtle and soft-spoken but always lent her great strength and determination to create that beautiful sound that lifted us beyond ourselves.

Davie, you helped lift us to God through your music as well as simply by being your loving self.  Thank you for sharing your greatest gifts with us for so many years.  You will truly be missed.  May you now know the joys of paradise where our spirits are finally contented in the fullness of life.

We will have a celebration of her life, here at St. Francis of Assisi Church on March 3rd with a 10 AM gathering and 11 AM Mass.  Everyone is welcomed to join us in a prayer of thanksgiving for the life and the love of this beautiful woman.
