Day Five:  Called to Clarity

At the end of her life Clare expresses her attitude towards the Church in her testament: Thus I bow my body and soul, I bend my knees and commend all my Sisters to the Holy Mother and the Church of Rome. For the love of the Lord, who lay poor in the manger, lived a life of poverty in the world and hung naked on the cross, may the cardinal ensure that we keep the vows of poverty we made to God and St. Francis.

Clare knew full well how wealthy the Church was. Yet she only objective once, when her community was about to be drawn into this wealth. Otherwise she did not criticize, but rather expressed her principles directly through her way of life, even to the extent of entrusting this wealthy Church with her most heartfelt concern, poverty.

Novena Prayer:

St. Clare, you are our Sister on her way to Christ. We shall be like pilgrims and foreigners in this world, trustfully receiving all we need to live for the Lord. In this trust I ask you to grant me the request that is so dear to my heart:… Implore our Lord Christ in his mercy to be with us always, just as we will always be with him now and for ever. Amen.
