Daily Reflection: Monday, August 21

Monday August 21

“Go, sell what you have and give to the poor.” Matt 19:21

The young man in today’s gospel was living a good life, obeying the commandments, even the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. The one thing that was missing was the sharing of the goods he had with those who had less. Jesus’ invitation was for the young man to rid himself of the things which would keep him from following Jesus completely. We also may be living good lives; Jesus is inviting us to divest of anything which keeps us from total commitment to him. Our unnecessary possessions may be holding us back from the freedom to love with open hearts, especially for those who do not have the resources they need to live.
