Daily Reflection: Friday, August 25

Friday August 25

“Which commandment in the Law is the greatest?” Matt 22:36

Note that Jesus’ response to this question is not one of the Ten Commandments but is based on other texts in the Torah. The law of love of God and neighbor is the greatest and the one on which all other commandments are based. Loving God with our whole heart, soul and mind is the first and loving our neighbor as ourselves is the second. If we use these as the basis for our own self-reflection we will be better able to judge the appropriateness of our actions. Note also that this law of love does not speak of judgment or evaluation of others – we leave that to God!
