Daily Reflection: Saturday, September 9

Saturday, September 9

St. Peter Claver, SJ ‘s memorial is celebrated at Mass today. He is known for his outstanding work with slaves. When ships of slaves would arrive, he would go into the boats and he would find them in the worst conditions possible. He treated them humanely and ministered to them in contrast to the way others treated them. It is said that he baptized 300,000 slaves in his lifetime and spent his life in service to them. The numbers of slaves and they way they were treated is shocking, but Peter tried to bring something of God to them. May we have his type of love and concern for all people who are taken used unjustly.
