Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows

Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel,

and to be a sign that will be contradicted and you yourself a sword will pierce

so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.   (Lk 2:34-35)

The celebration of Our Lady of Sorrows is a coda to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.  The pain of the Blessed Mother as she sees the pain suffered by her son, is a reminder of the harshness of life.  There is no getting around pain, sorrow, loss and grief.  The mature Christian accepts them along with the joy, consolation and glory.  All together, they make the life God intends for us.  God never leaves us suffering alone, but leads us into the fullness of life.
