Memorial of Saints Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs
I will show you what someone is like who comes to me,
listens to my words and acts on them.
That one is like a man building a house,
who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock…. (Lk 6:47-48)
The one who digs deep and builds on rock has a house that survives the flood. In our spiritual life, the rock is Jesus and the deep digging is our effort to know him and and build a dynamic relationship with him. Deep digging means that we have to work at it, as we do with all of our important relationships. It is not a walk in the park. What’s involved? Pondering his word in Scripture, talking with other disciples, loving his little ones and serving him in them, forgiving those who hurt us, and making quiet time to converse with Jesus in private. There is more, of course. There is no backhoe to make the deep digging easier; we have to use a shovel. But it is worth it.
