Daily Reflection: Thursday, February 22

Thursday, February 22, 2024 – Feast of the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle

So, what is the Chair of St. Peter the Apostle? The chair is an ancient wooden chair that has been venerated at St. Peter’s Basilica for well over thousands of years. Why is this chair so important? In the Catholic tradition, chairs are one of our primary symbols of teaching authority. Each bishop has a chair, the symbol of his authority. The Chair of St. Peter is a symbol of the teaching authority of the Bishop of Rome, the pope, is the successor of St. Peter (adapted from Companion to the Calendar Liturgy Training Publication)
