In our Gospel reading from John the topic is Peace.  “Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.’” The Hebrew word for Peace is Shalom.  Shalom means peace and is also a universal Hebrew greeting for hello, good-bye, and peace. However, shalom is much more!  The root word for shalom denotes wholeness or completeness.  It is a fullness that makes one want to give back, to generously repay in some way. This wholeness is a blessing, a manifestation of divine grace. In order to be a peacemaker, one needs to possess this quality. Shalom is the true, authentic peace because authentic peace needs to have wholeness as its foundation.  Today pray the peace prayer attribute to St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life

Shalom
