Daily Reflection: Tuesday, May 24

Tuesday, May 24

Today is the Anniversary of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. This basilica was built amid much controversy concerning what St. Francis would have wanted. Knowing his popularity, many of the early Friars knew that this would become a place of devotion to St. Francis. They knew that pilgrimages to this holy place would begin soon and they felt that an appropriate church needed to be built for the pilgrims where the body of St. Francis would be buried safe and secure from those who might want to steel his earthly remains. On this day the Lower Church was dedicated. The great Upper Church would be completed later with its famous frescoes of Giotto. “How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord God.”
