Daily Reflection: Friday, May 27

Friday, May 27

St. Augustine of Canterbury is our saint for the day. This is not the St. Augustine who is more familiar to us. Pope Gregory sent him to bring Christianity to Britain. Augustine’s response was to ask the Pope to withdraw this plan because he had heard of the ferocity of the Brits. Eventually, he and forty monks traveled to Britain and there they encountered those “uncouth” Brits. In spite of this, Augustine succeeded in converting King Ethelbert and his subjects and the church took root. His spirit is found in this quote: “Thou, O Lord are my portion…You alone I have chosen for my whole inheritance.”
