“Let justice descend, O heavens, like dew from above.” Isaiah 45: 7

Justice is a word that is often misused. People look for ‘justice’ when someone has been wronged, but it is often another way of saying that revenge is needed to right the wrong. We live with the incorrect concept that ‘an eye for an eye’ is an appropriate response to evil. The phrase actually was a way of ensuring that the punishment did not exceed the crime. True justice is being in right relationship with God and with each other. And that relationship is always one of recognizing the common humanity we share as children of God. Justice is always married to mercy, for we are all capable of harming each other even when we do not intend to do so. Let God’s justice reign!
