Daily Reflection: Friday, January 5

Saint John Neumann, Bishop

The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.  I someone has earthly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him? Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.   (1 Jn 3:16-18)

Sometimes it feels like a strain to love as we know we ought.  But there is a grace that changes grudging compassion into joy.  Then we feel confirmed in our love of God and neighbor.

John Frambes, ofm
