Daily Reflection: Friday, February 2

Friday, February 2, 2024 – Feast of The Presentation of the Lord

Can you believe it, it has been 40 days since Christmas. The presents are forgotten and the decorations are placed away. The Church is getting ready to celebrate Ash Wednesday in two weeks. Today’s feast is the day which recalls the event of the purification according to the law of Moses. Where every first born male shall be designated as holy to the Lord. During this event Mary and Joseph met Simeon and Anna who prophesized about Jesus.

Simeon out of joy, prays; “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory for your people Israel.”

Today there is a special rite within the liturgy, the blessing of the candles that will be used in our liturgical celebrations throughout the year.  Today you might want to get a new candle and say a blessing over it to be lit during your prayer time or at your Sunday meals.

O God, true light, who created light eternal, spreading it far and wide, pour into my heart the brilliance of your perpetual light by the splendor of this candle. Amen.
