Daily Reflection: Friday, January 6
January 6 Christmas Weekday
I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. (Mk 1:8)
The baptism of John the Baptist was with plain old water, but it was important. Those who recieved it declared their desire to live better lives, closer to God. Nothing to sniff at. But the Holy Spirit that Jesus would give would be the gift of divine life in those who believe in him. This is much more than the human desire to be near God (itself a grace); it is the reality of God dwelling in us. It is a gift given not only for our own sake, but for the good of the world. Those who receive the Holy Spirit will live for the good of the world.
