January 7  Christmas Weekday

They have no wine.  (Jn 2:3)

Had it not been for Jesus coming to the rescue, this would have caused great shame for the groom and his family.  It becomes the occasion for the first sign in the gospel of John.  It does not seem like a very big sign, especially because most of the wedding guests did not even know about it, but it does bring Jesus’ first followers to belief.

What strikes me is that the absence of wine is a situation of emptiness or privation.  Jesus comes into the void and fills it to overflowing with the best.  It is like Jesus himself coming into a world deprived of light and grace.
