Daily Reflection: Friday, July 26

The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.  But he has no root and lasts only for a time.  When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away.  (Mt 13:20-21)

Over the years, I have seen a number of “jailhouse conversions” and I genuinely believe that they are sincere.  It is sad, but they usually don’t last. Why? Maybe their conversions are incomplete or they don’t know what they are getting into or they have not let go of “old ways”.  Commitment can be their issue.  Often they don’t have a solid support system.  I like to think, however, that even if they wilt, they will keep a memory of the time when faith sparked in them or when they were welcomed into fellowship with believers.  That memory may help them someday.

On this celebration of Joachim and Anne, parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus, we remember a couple who persevered in faith for the long hall.  They had roots.
