Memorial of St. Bernard of Clairvaux

“Who then can be saved?”  Jesus looked at them and said, “For men this is impossible, but for God all things are possible.”  (Mt 19:25-26)

Not wealth, status or anything we can do will save us.  Only God can do that.   Our desire is important, but first trust in the Lord.

Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) was in the second generation of Cistercian monks.  The Cistercians were a reform of the Benedictines and they follow the Benedictine rule.  Bernard was one of those extraordinarily gifted human beings who love a challenge.  He infused new energy into his order.  Besides being an abbot and founding other Cistercian monasteries, he was a papal emissary.  He is known for his writings on the mystery of Divine Love, The Song of Songs and the Virgin Mary.  The Cistercians were helpful to the Franciscans during the organizational phase of their order.
