Daily Reflection: Thursday, December 7
Memorial of St Ambrose, Bishop and Doctor
Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but on the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. (Mt 7:21)
As one who prays publicly, leading others, I know how to say, “Lord, Lord.” And I know what it means. I never want to pray without meaning it, mouthing words, filling up time because it is expected. I wince when someone turns to me for prayer because it is the custom. Yes, it is my “job”. but whenever I address the Lord, I have my soul in my hands. When I say public prayers I want both to express what may be in the hearts of those who listen and also to lead them deeper in their own prayers. There is no way for me to know if I actually do that. But, I think, that authentic prayer, in public or not, leads a person to desire to do the will of God and do it.
