Daily Reflection: Monday, May 29

Monday May 29

Today we celebrate the memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church. Children share a unique bond with their mothers. The mother shares her very being, her flesh and blood with the child growing within her. That bond never dies, even as cells replace themselves over time. It cannot be destroyed, even if the relationship becomes unhealthy. When one’s mother dies, a part of oneself is gone forever. As Mother of the Church, Mary is given a spiritual bond with all of her children that is also unique and irreplaceable. Just as Mary bore Jesus in her own body, because we are one with Jesus, we are also one with his mother Mary.

As we also celebrate Memorial Day today, let us entrust to our mother Mary all those we honor for their willingness to give their lives for the sake of their country. Let us also pray for peace in our world so that no more lives need to be lost to war.
