Memorial of St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs

When the girl’s parents left the bedroom

and closed the door behind them,

Tobiah arose from bed and said to his wife,

“My love, get up.

Let us pray and beg our Lord to have mercy on us

and to grant us deliverance.”

She got up, and they started to pray

and beg that deliverance might be theirs.

And they began to say:

“Blessed are you, O God of our fathers,

praised be your name forever and ever.  (Tobit 8:4-5)

The book of Tobit is a kind of religious novel with some folktale elements.  It could well be put among the Wisdom books of the Hebrew Scriptures.  The passage I quote today is about a holy way to begin marriage.  Tobiah and Sarah get on their knees to entrust themselves to God in prayer.
