“Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic.” When St. Francis heard these words from today’s gospel reading, he wanted to live this way, this radical poverty. This radical poverty is to place one’s full trust in God. This is impossible for us as human beings to do. We want to feel in control of our lives and feel safe. Just because this is impossible; does not mean one should not strive to live this radical poverty to one’s best ability. And God gave us a gift to help us to live this radical poverty, the Holy Spirit. Today pray to the Holy Spirit for the courage to place all your trust in God.
