July 26. Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne

They received blessings from the Lord

and mercy from God their Savior. (cf Psalm 24:5)

What we know of the parents of the Virgin Mary is not from the Bible, but from the proto-gospel of James. I would call it legend. But Mary certainly did have parents and they were the grandparents of Jesus. This leaves room for holy imagination to speculate what they were like and how they loved their grandson.

As the first in my generation, I was blessed to know all four of my grandparents. They were all different and each gave me something that has helped to make me who I am. In addition to giving thanks for them today, I want to pray a blessing for all grandparents and their grands. May they be filled with love and joy.
