Daily Reflection: Friday, July 29

July 29   Memorial of Saints Martha, Mary, and Lazarus

Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”  (John 11:21-22)

Lazarus was dead, by-now-there-will-be-a-stench dead.  But Martha recognizes the power that Jesus has in his relationship with the Father, a power that is greater than death.  Obliquely, she asks Jesus to raise her brother, an amazing expression of faith. Calling Lazarus from the tomb, Jesus manifests his power and foreshadows  his own resurrection in glory.

With faith like Martha’s, we can ask Jesus to call us from the death of sin into the life of grace.
