Daily Reflection: Saturday, May 4

Saturday of the Fifth Week of Easter

If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you.

If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

And they will do all these things on account of my name,

because they do not know the one who sent me.   (Jn 15:20-21)

Although it may not be our own experience, there are some Catholics who are persecuted for the gospel’s sake, even in our country.  Catholic Charities workers who care for tired, thirsty, sick and homeless persons and families at the southern border have been subjected to insults and threats of violence.

Whether we live in the face of overt persecution or not, how do we live in a world where people simply do not know the One who sent Jesus.  It is not that they are all bad, but for them God does not matter or exist.  I ask myself, if I coast and simply blend in with them, am I really loving God and living the gospel?
