Daily Reflection: Thursday, May 23

Thursday, May 23

There is something encouraging as well as something frightening in Mark’s Gospel for today. The encouragement comes when Jesus says: “anyone who gives you a cup of water…because you belong to Christ…will surely not lose his reward.” The frightening words are: “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off…if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off…if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.” Drastic words from Jesus. He knows what people are up against and will be up against and he wants to warn them to be attentive and not let human cravings and temptations take them over and change their positive behavior into negative actions. Negative behavior can begin with certain thoughts and desires. Stay alert and careful!
