Daily Reflection: Friday, May 24

Friday, May 24

Mark’s Gospel for today is about divorce. Remember in Jesus’ day a woman was a man’s possession and marriages were arranged. A man could write a writ of divorce for many reasons such as stubbornness or differences or something objectionable. Divorce was fairly easy in Biblical times. If a woman was divorced she was left stranded. Jesus always spoke about the importance of marriage which meant that they had to work together and respect each other- an idea new at that time. Today, marriage continues to be something that is not easy for many. If you know someone who is divorced, don’t abandon them.
