Daily Reflection: Friday, October 14

Friday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time

Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?

Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.

… Do not be afraid.

You are worth more than many sparrows.  (Lk 12:6,7)

Sometimes, even when we are at our most fervent in prayer, it seems that we are beyond the notice of God.  Not so.  Around here there are plenty of sparrows.  They are so common that they are unremarkable.  Cardinals stand out among our local birds, but not sparrows.  They seem ordinary and unremarkable, easy to overlook.  But God notices them and values them.

These verses are in the context of having courage in persecution.  Whether we are in peril or not, Jesus tells us that God watches over us.  There is no need to be afraid.
