Luke 13:1-9

The parable of the non-productive fig tree reminds us that God is the God of second chances! The gardener asks the owner of the fig tree for another chance to re-enliven the tree. He will cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it so that it may produce fruit. We also are given chances for new life – we may need cultivation and even fertilizer when we have lost our way. God is willing to help us rather than condemn us. We need to be open to the ways our ‘gardener’ works on us to bring us to a fuller life. God is not ready to give up on us, no matter how far we may seem to have strayed.
