Daily Reflection: Thursday, November 3

Thursday, November 3

Today, we remember St. Martin de Porres. Born in Peru he was the son of a Spanish gentleman and a freed Panamanian slave. Since he was from a mixed heritage, he underwent much ridicule and was treated in the same way by the Dominican friars. Because of his genuine care for the sick and his acceptance of all classes of people, his charity became well known. He is the first black person from the Americas to be declared a saint. May his ability to overcome the prejudice shown him and his openness to embrace people inspire us in our contemporary world.
