Daily Reflection: Friday, November 11

November 11, Memorial of St. Martin of Tours, Bishop

Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it,

but whoever loses it will save it.    (Lk 17:33)

 This is a sobering verse.

Self-preservation is a fundamental instinct and it is hard to go against it.  In order to save my life by losing it, I have to change what seems innate.  Where is my life centered?  Is the capital “I” what I am about?  Or am I about serving the Lord and loving my neighbor.  The great paradox is that the less I am about me, the more free and alive I become.

Those who fulfill this verse have put themselves in God’s hands and trust completely in him.  They don’t need to worrry about preserving their lives.
